Have fun hammering and make a colourful geometric picture.
Get the kids using some tools and make a bit of art at the same time.
This is a great way to use up offcuts of wood and ends of yarn.
What you’ll need:
Plank offcuts
Nails
Wool
Hammer
Scissors
Paint and paintbrush if you want to paint the plank first
Update May 2016: We got given a box of loom bands a while ago and I’m always trying to find new things to do with them so we gave them a go with our wood and nail pictures. Layer them over the nails and they create a lovely effect.
What to do:
Paint the plank and leave to dry.
Hammer in nails in random places over the plank, leaving 1-2cms poking out.
Wind wool around the nails to make patterns.
We made our nail and wool art in the garden.
This is a good project to return to, add different yarn, cut it off and start again. Loom bands are definitely worth a try too.
What you’ll need: planks of wood, hammer, small nails, wool and scissors.
We had some plank cut offs leftover from making shelves. We painted our planks with ready mixed poster paint.
Let the kids knock nails in to the plank (leave a centimetre or two poking out). Watch out for fingers! Adult supervision required.
You can use wool, string, raffia or thread to make these pictures.
Wind the wool around to make different patterns.
The boy’s wool and nail picture.
The girl’s wool and nail art.
Update May 2016: Try using loom bands instead of yarn.
