Once you start practising I don’t think you’ll want to stop.
You don’t need to be good at drawing to create these stunning optical illusions. If you can draw a straight line then you’re set.
It’s a pretty forgiving medium too so even if you make a mistake and keep going, it’s worth it!
It’s very hard to describe what to do in words so I’ve put together a step by step picture ‘map’ to make two of the easiest shapes: triangle and square. Each illusion is made of lots of shapes joined together filled in.
Once you’ve mastered these you’ll be able to experiment with other shapes, lines and colours.

These optical illusion drawings look complicated but they’re actually pretty simple to do.
Triangle template.
Draw lots of triangles together and make the template pattern in each one and watch what happens!
Ta da! Triangle optical illusion.
Square template.
Draw a grid of squares and fill each one in.
Square optical illusion.
Hexagon optical illusion. This one was a bit trickier as it had more sides and made a few mistakes but still pleased with the results.
Random triangle pattern.
Once you get the hang of filling a shape the possibilities are endless. This is incredibly addictive and a very satisfying activity.
